A Bit of Portuguese Charm

I’m just back from a furniture trade show in Porto, Portugal where, after visiting the show, I managed to spend a wonderful day exploring this charming city.  I really didn’t know what to expect, and found centuries-old churches and houses tiled in blue and white, ornate wrought iron balconies, church interiors layered with gold leaf, the original inspiration for the staircase at Hogwart’s in the Harry Potter stories in the Livraria Lello, one of the oldeest bookstores in the world, (JK Rowling apparently taught English in Porto for several years pre- Harry Potter), and the Casa de Serralves — the most gorgeous pink Art Deco mansion in the middle of the Sculpture Park surrounding the Museum of Contemporary Art.  I was so lucky to stumble upon the Casa on a gorgeous sunny February afternoon and had it all to myself.  Unfortunately I couldn’t get inside, but took lots of photos of the beautiful exterior and gardens.  The best way get around hilly Porto is by taking a Segway tour — it was fantastic!  Finally, of course, I couldn’t leave Porto without a couple of bottles of port.
